Korean War

The Korean War was a military conflict between the North and South in the Republic of Korea. The war began on June 25, 1950. The Korean peninsula, prior to the end of World War II was ruled by Japan. After the defeat of Japan in 1945 the peninsula was divided between North and South at the 38th parallel. The United States troops occupying the southern part of Korea, and the Soviet troops occupying the northern parts. Although negotiations about becoming one again were going on, the tension increased between the north and the south. Then it turned into open warfare and the North Korean forces invaded South Korea. The United States and United Nations armies came to aid the South Koreans in repelling the invasion. A United Nations offensive repelled the North Koreans almost to the Yalu River, as a result the PCK or Peoples Republic of China came to the aid of the communist north. With China involved in the war now, it took on a more dangerous tone. In mid-summer of 1950 the UN invasion at Inchon hurt the North Korean war machine. Within the next two months UN armies punched through North Korea. Victory was in sight. But then in a number of brutal battles fought in brutally cold weather conditions the UN was thrown back midway into South Korea. But a UN counter-offensive in the beginning of the year forced the Chinese army to retreat to the north. The War seemed to be a stalemate between the North and South. Many lives on both sides were lost with ever little gains to show for it. I think that since this war was between North and South Korea, no other countries should of took part in it. Many countries were involved in the Korean War besides North and South Korea. The three big countries that took part were the United States, Soviet Union and China. The reason the United States came in was, once North Korean troops invaded the South, Truman thought that it would be right to take up the opportunity to defend a non communist group from invasion by a communist group. They were determined to not "loose" another country to communism. The North Koreans had the aid of the Chinese Army that was thought to be back by Communist Russia. Tanks, Guns and ammunition were thought to be supplied by Russia to the invading Chinese. I feel that the United States should of not took part in this war. It is not worth risking American soldiers lives in a war that is suppose to be between North and South Korea. Maybe communism would of worked in Korea? China on the other hand had no right to be there also. China really did not have a reason to take part in this war. They only wanted to keep a safe zone so that no countries would interrupt there internal reconstruction to communism. To me i think they are just fighting for there own good and it is useless to everyone else, so they should not have even took part in the Korean War in the first place. I think it would of been better if these countries did not take part in this war, they would have all benefited and not as many lives would of been lost.

  1. Why don't you agree with Truman stating that we shouldn't of invaded? I agree with truman because he's right, we should not let a non-Communist country be taken over by a Communist Country. I mean Communism already messed up the Soviet Union because of Stalin.

  2. All the historical examples of communism, such as the Soviet Union under Stalin, result with a mass murder. As Americans we can not stand on the sidelines knowing innocent people are suffering from their deranged government. We became involved and fought against a harmful form of government that could have disrupted thousands of lives. Go Truman.

  3. I agree with joshua that I think Truman is right by saying that we should not allow ourselves to get taken over by a noncommunist party. And that we cannot just ignore the fact that innocent people are being killed so i think it was a good thing we got involved.

  4. Truman, in my eyes, was both right and wrong. He was right that we should have invaded Korea before anyone else did but he was also wrong about the fact that were going into war, again. And I'm sure many people were not pleased.
