Steroids

Steroids have been used in many sports for decades. Non- medical uses of anabolic steroids given without prescription are banned by most major sports organizations now. Anabolic- steroids, also known as “roids” are used as performance enhancers to boost, hype and power your muscles. Many professional athletes including Olympic athletes have been caught for using steroids. For example, Marion Jones an Olympic sprinter won many running awards, but forfeited all of her awards as far back as September of 2000, after admitting to using PEDS. John McEwen, who won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games, was disqualified after testing positive for THG. When Barry Bonds and other big baseball stars were caught using steroids, there names were kept a secret on the league list so know one would know that they did steroids. Does the public not need to know about the heroes of Americas favorite past times appearing to be dirty cheaters? I think a 100% of people should know about these things because it is not fair when you are playing the game and beat records just because you are on steroids. Even though this has now become illegal in sports I feel that the records that we have right now in sports are unfair, especially in baseball. Babe Ruth and many other major league baseball players did not use steroids in the time when they played. Now, players use them all the time and some, beat many records while on roids. I think that is unfair because players like Babe Ruth played the game without anything and only used their own natural strength to make records. This is where the debate really heats up. Are steroids cheating, or just part of the improved techniques of honing ones athletics skills? This is a question that has been debated for sometime. In the recent past, sports organizations such as the Olympics, Major League Baseball, the NFL and others have taken a stand against this use of steroids. Now if you are a participant in any of the organizations mentioned above you will be subject to drug testing. Some of this testing is scheduled, and some of the testing is random. But despite the risk of their careers if they get caught taking performance enhancers, many athletes still do. This is because, just like the fans that cheer them on, they are impressed by the results they bring to their team by being stronger. I feel like as a fan we should not back the players up that are using any type of steroid. Regardless of their impact on performance, their use is a major health risk. For example, NFL player Lyle Alzado took steroids and developed a brain tumor. He claimed that this is what happens when you use anabolic steroids. So I think that it is not fair that players now are beating records on steroids, because it is as if they are cheating by not using their own natural body strength. When players who played the game back in the early days made records using only their natural strength, determination and hard work

Korean War

The Korean War was a military conflict between the North and South in the Republic of Korea. The war began on June 25, 1950. The Korean peninsula, prior to the end of World War II was ruled by Japan. After the defeat of Japan in 1945 the peninsula was divided between North and South at the 38th parallel. The United States troops occupying the southern part of Korea, and the Soviet troops occupying the northern parts. Although negotiations about becoming one again were going on, the tension increased between the north and the south. Then it turned into open warfare and the North Korean forces invaded South Korea. The United States and United Nations armies came to aid the South Koreans in repelling the invasion. A United Nations offensive repelled the North Koreans almost to the Yalu River, as a result the PCK or Peoples Republic of China came to the aid of the communist north. With China involved in the war now, it took on a more dangerous tone. In mid-summer of 1950 the UN invasion at Inchon hurt the North Korean war machine. Within the next two months UN armies punched through North Korea. Victory was in sight. But then in a number of brutal battles fought in brutally cold weather conditions the UN was thrown back midway into South Korea. But a UN counter-offensive in the beginning of the year forced the Chinese army to retreat to the north. The War seemed to be a stalemate between the North and South. Many lives on both sides were lost with ever little gains to show for it. I think that since this war was between North and South Korea, no other countries should of took part in it. Many countries were involved in the Korean War besides North and South Korea. The three big countries that took part were the United States, Soviet Union and China. The reason the United States came in was, once North Korean troops invaded the South, Truman thought that it would be right to take up the opportunity to defend a non communist group from invasion by a communist group. They were determined to not "loose" another country to communism. The North Koreans had the aid of the Chinese Army that was thought to be back by Communist Russia. Tanks, Guns and ammunition were thought to be supplied by Russia to the invading Chinese. I feel that the United States should of not took part in this war. It is not worth risking American soldiers lives in a war that is suppose to be between North and South Korea. Maybe communism would of worked in Korea? China on the other hand had no right to be there also. China really did not have a reason to take part in this war. They only wanted to keep a safe zone so that no countries would interrupt there internal reconstruction to communism. To me i think they are just fighting for there own good and it is useless to everyone else, so they should not have even took part in the Korean War in the first place. I think it would of been better if these countries did not take part in this war, they would have all benefited and not as many lives would of been lost.

Major League Baseball Being Played During World War II

During the time of World War II everyone tried to contribute and help toward the war. Even women helped serve and created "The Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron". All Americas resources and money went out to try and help with the war. World War II cost the United States more than 400,000 deaths. This war brought tons of married women into the work force, and changed the nations minority groups drastically. Also during the time of World War II Major League Baseball was a big thing to Americans, and the players got paid big money to play. Many people thought how are people going to play baseball with this war going on? One man named Frank Frisch said " can you imagine trying to get a baseball club in shape in this kind of weather?". There was a big controversy of whether or not Major League Baseball should be played or not. Another man by the last name of Bradley said " It's too grand of a game to be turned into a farce". I think that during this time with the war going on and everything else Major League Baseball should have just taken a break and started up again once the war was over. I feel that instead of paying all this money to the players they should have put it to the war and anything that the country needed at the time. I especially think that major league baseball shouldn't of been played because more than 60% of the players who were on starting line ups the year before, were out the next year due to the war. Also many other non starting players were in the armed forces and were unable to play. Bradley again said " If I can't present baseball of high quality I'll close my park". I fully agree with this statement because if baseball is going to be played it should be at its best and during a prime time where people can actually watch and enjoy it. Because of the war training camps had to be moved and some teams even had to practice in gyms. Many coaches said when their teams practiced in the gyms all players wanted to do was play basketball and no one even focused on the baseball training. All natural resources, such as gasoline, rubber for tires, natural gas and electricity should have been saved and given to the troops. Instead it was use to fly players to different things and gas was used in buses to also transport players. The U.S Navy was sending targets to the Marshall Islands and as a result they had to post pone spring training to allow the players in combat to remain a little longer at their jobs. It also was dangerous to play ball at this time because of the broadcasting. Broadcasts of the game were relayed over seas by the armed forces. Announcers had to be extra careful about what they said so they wouldn't give any sort of clues to the enemy. This is just another reason why baseball should not be being played during this time because, if a broadcaster were to say something wrong such bad outcomes could fire onto the United States. It wouldn't of been hard to stop playing during this time and it would be easy for them to start everything back up after the war was over. When our country declares and is committed to war, all of our countries assets should go to this cause.

Repatriations of the Dead

At the end of WWI America was sending hundreds of causalities from Europe to the United States. Many of the army officers worried about the massive expenses this was taking and logistical difficulties. Many thought that it wasn't a good idea for the bodies to be sent home because once families would see their dead loved ones they would be shocked and realize how brutal the war actually was. Weeks after the war Major General Frank Mcintyre prepared a news release saying the dead war men would be better left in Europe. I strongly disagree with the fact they want to leave all of the dead American bodies in Europe. I believe that since they sacrificed their lives in the war the least the government can do is send them back to the United States where they can be brought to their loved ones. Bringing the dead soldiers home to their families also allows the families to recognize their soldiers life and helps their grief. Especially one mother Mrs. L. Mantel who simply just wanted her boys body back home. " He was my only son" Mantel said "I just want him to rest on his own soil poor boy." Another mother said "You took my son from me and sent him to war…My son sacrificed his life to America's call, and now you must as a duty of yours bring my son back to me." I feel that no matter the expenses or economies problems all causalities should be brought home to America. It is a way to show respect and honor the soldiers who risked their lives in this awful war. Also families should have the chance to have a funeral for the ones they have lost. Unless a family does not want there solider sent home every other one should be. More than 20,000 men stayed in Europe and lie their today in maintained military cemeteries.

The final outcome of this situation occurred on October 29, 1919 when the War Department of the United States announced that all dead servicemen could upon request be returned from Europe to any relative who requested it. The United States government would bear the expense for transport and for burial in on of the National Cemeteries. The families also had the option of burying their loved one in a private graveyard. Congress approved $5 million dollars for these repatriation expenses.

In the end most American families requested that their loved ones be returned. Over 46,000 dead American soldiers returned home. This repatriation movement began in November of 1920 and continued until July 1922 when the last American killed in World War 1 was put to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.

As I stated before many brave soldier's families decided to let their loved ones remain in Europe. But this was their own personal choice.

My argument is that it should be the fallen soldier's family choice of whether or not to have their son or daughter return. And it should be the responsibility of the United States government to handle the expense of the return.
